Are the tips of the rotors of helicopters approaching the speed of sound?
When I hear a pig or a Huey Chinook pass I hear the sound of clapping and wondered if the tips of the rotors. Anyone? Anyone?

When the Chinook moves a maximum speed of 315 km / h, the tip of the rotor from one side of each rotor is actually moving at 850 km / h + 315 km / h, because not only is spinning, but the whole plane moves through the air. The front rotor Chinooks rotates counterclockwise when viewed from the top, so that the tip is moved to 1165 kilometers / h on starboard at the point more his bow. The rear rotor rotates in the opposite direction, so it moves faster on the port side of the helicopter. The speed of sound at sea level is 1236 km / h in a grade of 20 (degrees Celsius) day (68 Fahrenheit). Thus, the tip of the rotor is only 71 km / h slower than the speed of sound.
