Britain calls for tougher action against al Qaeda in Pakistan
B UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged Pakistan to take stronger action against Al Qaeda and to intensify its efforts to locate the group's leader, Osama bin Laden.
In the United States (U.S.) The Senate report yesterday said bin Laden was certainly within reach of U.S. troops in the mountains of Tora Bora when U.S. military leaders made the decision crucial and costly to pursue terrorist leader with massive force.
The report, according to Reuters, said the killing or capture bin Laden in his most vulnerable in December 2001 has had a lasting impact beyond the fate of a man. Escape of bin Laden today laid the foundation for strengthened Afghan insurgency and inflammation of the internal conflicts that threaten Pakistan now says.
Staff members of the Senate Foreign Majority Democrats Committee prepared the report at the request of the chairman, Sen. John Kerry, as President Barack Obama prepares to increase U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
Brown said the efforts of the British and coalition forces in Afghanistan to tackle the Taliban insurgency was to be accompanied by a more effective by the Pakistani government and its forces across the border.
"Brown called the President (Asif Ali) Zardari yesterday, expressed his support so that Pakistani forces are doing against the Pakistani Taliban, but said he wanted to see tougher measures against the leaders of Al Qaeda "Said a British official.
The official said Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani is coming to London on Thursday to meet with Brown.
In television interviews yesterday, Brown said that while progress has been made by Pakistani forces in South Waziristan, a stronghold of Pakistani The Taliban, there are still major issues to address in the country.
"People will ask why, eight years after 2001, Osama bin Laden has never been about being captured ... and what you can do the authorities in Pakistan that is far more effective, "he told Sky News.
"Al Qaeda has based in Pakistan that the base is still there who are able to recruit from abroad, "he said.
"The authorities in Pakistan should convince that they are taking all necessary measures to address this threat. "
He also wondered why there was no evidence leading to the capture of bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, although people in Pakistan know where they are.
His comments came as a U.S. report criticized the military leaders under President George W. Bush to miss an opportunity to capture or kill bin Laden in 2001.
Meanwhile, under pressure Pakistani leader, Zardari, has claimed "significant success" in a military offensive against Taliban fighters in the remote northwest tribal.
He spoke as the main opposition party in Pakistan, asked him to immediately renounce much of their power amid calls for the unpopular leader to take a ceremonial role or resign.
Political instability threatens to distract the United States ally in its fight against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda near the Afghan border.
Zardari inherits the presidency sweeping powers of his predecessor, General Pervez Musharraf, who staged a military coup in 1999 and resigned the year past.
He has promised to give the prime minister, in line with original Constitution of Pakistan, but has been accused of dragging his feet by an opposition furious.
Zardari, who is battling growing unpopularity and strained relations with the powerful army, made the remarks during a conversation telephone with Brown.
Pakistan sent 30,000 troops backed by warplanes and combat helicopters in South Waziristan Oct. 17, in the most ambitious operation to date against the Taliban in their mountain stronghold near the Afghan border.
Although there has been some resistance in the region, many officials and analysts believe that most of the 10,000 Taliban fighters in the district have fled to neighboring North Waziristan and Orakzai.
Pakistan is also facing political uncertainty after an amnesty law for the protection of Zardari and senior aides of corruption cases expired over the weekend, raising fears of a new crisis in the country fighting alongside the Taliban.
Zardari has taken control of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, seen as a move to fend off criticism and enforce its election promises to devolve more power to Parliament.
