While Virginia, as an aviation destination, may seem a shadow of Washington with its world-renowned National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, half of that facility is really great feel for yourself Virginia, and the state of many others, though smaller sites offer significant aviation focuses of paying passengers airfields to space capsules.
National Air and Space Museum's second floor, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, located in Chantilly, Virginia, near Washington-Dulles International Airport. Built to conserve and display the remaining 80 percent of the aerospace collection too large or too numerous for the existing structure on the National Mall or the Paul E. Garber Conservation and Restoration Fund in Suitland, Maryland, modern hangar construction appear, the name of International Lease and the Corporation Financial Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in recognition of its donation of $ 65 million, had opened on 25 October 2000, when he had Hazy turned the first shovel. The project ultimately cost $ 311 million design, site infrastructure and construction, requiring a 600-team solid construction, had taken about three years to complete before the first of several opening ceremonies could be held.
The first of them, amid first snowstorm of the season took place on 3 December 2003 and has been a special, pre-public "Appreciation Day" held by its sponsors, donors, and National Air and Space Society members. The event, excluded by a military ceremony, national anthem and a tax speech by the Museum Director Gen. Jack Dailey, had been a day of a long series of programs and the presentation of many of the aircraft on display.
The openings museums, including the "Salute to Military Aviation Veterans", the "celebration of the opening gala," and "dedication Museum" had preceded the actual public opening, held on 15 December 2003, the centennial of the Wright brothers first powered, sustained and controlled heavier than air flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Divided into two main areas, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center features a collection of 141 aircraft, 148 large space artifacts, and over 1,500 smaller items. The first area, the Boeing Aviation Hangar, measures 986 feet long, 248 feet wide and 103 feet tall, and displays of aircraft in three levels, while the second, the James S. McDonnell Hangar, is comparatively 262 feet long, 180 feet wide and 80 feet high. The 164-foot-tall Donald D. Engen observation tower overlooking the Dulles International Airport and the 479-seat IMAX cinema completes the experience.
Exhibits are grouped into 16 broad categories: vertical flight, sport aviation, business aviation, commercial aviation, Aviation Pre-1920, Korea and Vietnam, Cold War Aviation Modern Military Aviation, Aerobatics, German WWII aircraft, ultralights, Military Aviation: 1920-1940, Flight Human Space, Space Science Applications satellites and rockets and missiles.
In early aviation aircraft as represented by the aerodrome Langley, the Nieuport 28C-1, and the SPAD XVI, while World War II designs include the North American P-51C Mustang and the Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Enola Gay", that the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, effectively ending the war. Naval aviation is represented by aircraft such as the Vought F4U-1D Corsair and Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat. Among the pure fighter planes are the Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star, the McDonnell F-4S Phantom II, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and A-6B Intruder Grumman.
Aircraft from the category of transport museum representing the piston, Jet pure subsonic and supersonic designs, some of which are very rare, as the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190F, a quad-engine, tail wheel aircraft that had application as a passenger plane, the German Junkers Ju 52/3m, with its three engines, fuselage corrugated metal, and the tail wheel, the Boeing B-307 Stratoliner "Flying Cloud", the world's first four-engine passenger pressure, the Lockheed L-1049H Constellation, the Boeing 367-80, prototype of the Boeing 707 and the supersonic Concorde.
Supersonic military aircraft is represented by the Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird.
The James S. McDonnell Hangar, whose centerpiece is the space shuttle Enterprise offers a rich collection of spacecraft, rockets and satellites, including the Gemini VII capsule, Mariner 10, Mercury capsule 15B, a Redstone rocket, and the quarantine Mobile uses after the return of the mission Apollo 11.
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, along with the original Air and Space Museum building on the National Mall is an integral part of most aerospace museum in the world.
The 200-acre Flying Circus Aerodrome, for example, located in Bealeton, Virginia, and established in 1971, offers a 1920-and 1930-air biplane was shown every Sunday from May to October reminiscent of the days of aviation tour, billing itself as "the greatest show beyond Earth. "His fleet, which is mainly in the airport hangar near Warrenton, and flew in on weekends, includes enclosed and open N2S Piper Cubs booth-1 and -3 Stearman, Waco, and biplanes of the fleet, and is available for straight and level and aerobatic rides of 15 to 30 minutes before and after the show.
After paying at the gatehouse, park cars on the grass behind the public area, including bench seats, Air Fifi Show Coffee rate of light, and a small gift shop gray barn. A few hangars, located across the field and red and white ceilings to tables with names like "Curtiss," can also be visited.
The Air Show yearly program features many special days, including antique cars, tractors, motorcycles, models of airplanes and hot air balloons.
The entrance immediately transports the visitor through a time portal to the lumbering era.
A summer flight, aboard a Waco biplane, also brought me back to this time. The momentum of the same on the grass with a full and 1,900 rpm the throttle, The aircraft, powered by the single-engine uncowled, the tail wheel lifted off the carpet of green fuzzy company and produced its two wings, covered with cloth in the sky to 70 mph.

Settling into the plateau 600 feet overhead, which was routed over light green velvet fields are bordered dark green trees, which resembled modern geometric art patterns. Silver hay silos had risen triumphant over them.
From a series figure-eights into rectangles of dry, almost the gold fields, whose plow marks appeared as touches of texture, the biplane assumed the west toward the hills soft green Shenandoah National Park past the blur of the propeller before starting a much too early, reduced power sliding on the continued growth trees into the countryside and the solution gently to the grass with his two main wheels.
The Virginia Aviation Museum, which is closer to the east coast at the Richmond International Airport, attracts visitors with its exterior Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and has 36 historic interiors, period and reproduction aircraft, including the Wright brothers' kite, gliders, and 1903 Flyer, the Vultee V1-AD once owned by William Randolph Hearst, Fairchild FC-2W2 Admiral Richard E. Byrd had used to fly over Antarctica, and a collection of piston and pure jet engines. A full-size Piper J-3 Cub, who was recently transferred from Science Museum of Virginia chapter, permits examination of the four forces of flight simulators and while several exhibitions interactive study aerodynamics.
In early aviation, the principle focus of the collection includes several pristine-mono and biplanes, such as a standard of 1918 E-1 Advanced Trainer, a fighter of 1917 SPAD VII, the only known Wright starting Speedwig Model A-14D, a target of electronic design Transport Mailwing Pitcairn PA-5 of 1927, a 1927 Travel Air 2000, a 1930 Fleet Model 1 military base coach, and a 1918 Curtiss JN-4D Jenny.
Both the piston and pure jet engines include a Wright J-6 Whirlwind 5, a Curtiss OX-5, 1914 Le Rhône 9C rotary engine, a Wright R-2600 Cyclone 14, a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major, A-65 of Continental, a General Electric J-31, and Pratt and Whitney J - 58.
Dioramas depicting the World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen and the Women Air Force Service Pilots. Educational programs, serving students, scouts, and groups of seniors, including classes such as "The Math Wright, "The way Wright", "Paper Airplane Workshop", "Balloons and the Civil War in Virginia," and "Discover the World Over aviation.
Further south, in Hampton Roads, its air force outdoor park, dedicated in recognition of the contributions made by NASA and Langley Air Force Base airspace and development and for your interest in community efforts, including several unique aircraft designs, including the Lockheed T-33A T-Bird, an A-7E Corsair II, a XV-6A Kestrel V / STOL, an F-86L Saber North America, later developed North American Rockwell F-100D Super Saber, a McDonnell F-101F Voodoo, Northrop F-89J Scorpion, and an F-105D Thunderchief Republic Aviation. Even rarer, perhaps, is its space-related collection, including a SM-78 Jupiter's surface-ground medium-range ballistic missile, a secondary Western Electric-14 Nike-Hercules two missiles stage, a Jet Propulsion Lab M-2 ballistic missile Cape, one of North American Aviation Mercury / Little Joe Booster, and a test of the Mercury capsule.
The Virginia Air and Space Center, located in downtown Hampton, on the waterfront, is $ 30 million, 110,000 square feet, nine-story, a story which had opened on 5 April 1992, and is characterized by its futuristic, networked, dual-building, the gull-wing roof resembles the architecture. Its more than 30 historic air and spacecraft, representing over 100 years of flight, are displayed in the recently completed $ 9 million Adventures in Flight Gallery and the Gallery Space, and include such designs as the command module of Apollo 12, who had made the trip to the moon, AirTran a DC-9-30, a B-24 Liberator nose section, a Thunderstreak F.84, an F-4E Phantom II, a Stearman N2S-3, A Lunar Orbiter, an F-104 Starfighter, F-106 Delta Dart, a YF-16 Fighting Falcon, and a P Aircobra-39Q. A new exhibit, "Space Quest: Exploring the Moon, Mars and Beyond", was recently introduced in the Gallery Space. extensive exposures special hot-air balloons, noise reduction, a Boeing 717 simulator cockpit struggle glass, aircraft flight surfaces, Comparative efficiency the propeller and landing simulator space shuttle, are complemented by the Riverside IMAX and Curtiss Jenny A Century of Flight Companies.
The Virginia Air and Space Center displays a timeline of aviation accomplishments of Virginia. The first captive balloon ascent of a ship, for example, a ship anchored in the Army Union of Hampton Roads, had occurred in 1861, and Eugene Ely had become the first to take off from what had been considered the first carrier, USS Birmingham, anchored nearby in 1910. Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, the predecessor to NASA Langley, had been established. In 1927, the USS Langley, become a miner, had been commissioned as the first aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy. In 1931, NACA Langley had opened the world's first comprehensive scale wind tunnel capable of testing full-size aircraft at speeds of up to 118 kilometers per hour. In 1934, the Newport News shipyard had built the first purpose-built aircraft carrier, USS Ranger. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) had become the National Air and Space Association (NASA) in 1958 and first U.S. astronauts, the Mercury Seven, was formed in the NASA Langley Research Center. United States 'first transonic wind tunnel was open NASA Langley in 1982.
The museum also serves as the Visitor Center at NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. Four miles north of the museum, the U.S. Army had bought land in December 1916 with the purpose of constructing, in collaboration with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, an airfield. The Army had subsequently trained crews and aircraft tested there during World War I in 1921, Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell led bombing trials from Langley to demonstrate the feasibility of air patrol and its effectiveness in destroying warships. Major General Frank Andrews later directed air combat command, which became the forerunner of the Forces Army Air WWII and eventually became U.S. Today's Air Force.
Virginia, although initially perceived as a shadow of Washington with Smithsonian Institution on the National Mall, is a relatively small state that offers a long and complex path facets of aviation.
